EAST TO WEST ALC WELCOMES By Pat Brennan As a last year drew to its close “Shut the door on 24” became a sentiment shared by many as we bid farewell to a year so full of upheaval and change it was briefly dubbed as “Everything Everywhere All At Once’, a description borrowed from the title of a 2023 Oscar Winning movie. We welcomed in 2025 with parties, midnight festivities of fireworks displays, Hogmanay first-footing, and Auld Lang Syne according to our customs. Shortly after, on January 29th the first new moon of the year ushered in the Chinese Lunar New Year. 2025 is the Year of The Snake which, amongst other attributes, symbolizes good luck, change and rebirth. The Lunar New Year is the occasion of a huge number of traditional celebrations for Chinese at home and abroad and is one of the largest and most attended of any in Chinese culture. In Canada we are blessed to have a richly diverse population and communities celebrating cultures and traditions drawn from all around the world and are free to celebrate them all! Happy New Year Everyone. |
