The gong resounds, the curtain opens, and a heavenly scene is right before your eyes. Fairies emerge from a sea of billowing clouds. Mongolians ride on horseback across grasslands as vast as the sky. Classic stories of love and loss, of humour and heroic deeds, come to life.
Here we have it. This is Shen Yun, where you will discover the beauty and wisdom of China before communism, celebrate the splendid Chinese heritage in its original form, and be mesmerized by how vibrant, exciting, and profound the classic Chinese culture can be.
The name, Shen Yun, can be translated as “the beauty of divine beings dancing”. Shen Yun is the world’s premier classical Chinese dance and music company, bringing to life a lost culture through beautiful art. Shen Yun is more than a performance – it’s a traditional Chinese culture revival.
With stories and legends, vibrant costumes and backdrops, original music and a few fun surprises – Shen Yun is an experience that will delight your senses, inspire your heart, and leave you feeling great. Charlotte Observer commented on Shen Yun as “an explosion of colour and sound… Chinese culture in its fullest flower”.
From the Yellow Emperor of antiquity, to the splendor of the Tang Dynasty, all the way to the exquisite elegance of the Qing Dynasty, the lineage of Chinese civilization runs five millennia deep. It is a story brimming with heroes, whose legacy preserved in tales of courage and sacrifice, integrity and loyalty, compassion and virtue.
China’s ancient name, “The Land of the Divine” tells of a world where deities and mortals together walked the Earth. Music, medicine, calligraphy, clothing, language, and much more were said to have been brought down from above. Buddhist, Taoist, and other disciplines were at the heart of society. Emperors sought to follow the Way of Heaven, and daily life was replete with rituals connecting the human and the divine.
However, after decades of communist rule, much of this divine inspired culture has been destroyed or forgotten.
Today, Shen Yun travels to over 150 cities and performs at the most prestigious theatres around the world annually. From Tokyo to Paris, Sydney to New York, Mexico City to Toronto, Shen Yun’s live performances garner thunderous applause and accolades from full houses everywhere, and attract over 1 million audience members each year.
Through the universal language of dance and music, Shen Yun transcends cultural and language boundaries, and conveys extraordinary depth and breadth of genuine Chinese culture to the audience.
Some audience members drive hundreds of miles to see it. Others watch the same performance five or six times. You can hear everything from an entire alphabet of superlatives to “it defies description.” They say it is something you have to see to believe.
